Word of The Week! Curmudgeon Richmond Writing
Word of The Week! Curmudgeon Richmond Writing Science-Fiction and Fantasy writer Fran Wilde, who works with my students when sheâs on campus, once quipped Joe, you are a misanthrope in danger of becoming a curmudgeon. Fran actually had that backwards, and that says a great deal about how fine a line exists between these words and, perhaps, who they represent. The Oxford English Dictionary Online only takes the term back to the 16th Century, in the sense of being mean-spirited and mistrustful. The words genesis, the OED notes, is unknown. Like some curmudgeons I have known, then, our word seems to have just shown up to spoil our days. The American Heritage Dictionary also reveals that for two centuries, attempts to find the origin of the word have failed. The term has, moreover, shifted in what it signifies. For a long time, the elusive curmudgeon often was depicted as old, mean, and miserly. Think of Ebeneezer Scrooge (a character I portrayed in our 6th Grade Christmas play). Lately the grasping miser seems to have given way to a merely grumpy old geezer, usually male. Thus my Simpsons example. So short-tempered, mistrustful, grumpy? Thats me, Fran. But a hater of all mankind? Nonsense! That would be someone like Mark Twain late in his life, who wrote in an 1898 notebook entry that The human race consists of the damned and the ought-to-be damned. Those are the words of someone who really hates the entire species: a misanthrope. You see it in his later work, especially after A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. I hope my fate is gentler than the hero of that novel or, for that matter, its author. Writing this has me grinning, something curmudgeons rarely do. So perhaps there is hope. Just stay off my lawn this summer! This blog will continue through the balmy months, so nominate a word by e-mailing me (jessid -at- richmond -dot- edu) or leaving a comment below. Socrates, The, And Socrates - 2175 Words
Nevertheless, Socrates tries continue their discussion with him attempting to direct Meno to the search for what virtue is since neither of them have recollected a definition. Meno, however, wishes for Socrates to return to his initial question of whether or not virtue is teachable. Socrates is reluctant to do this because he does not want to inquire into the qualities of something that he does not have a definition for, but agrees to do it Menoââ¬â¢s way as long as Meno allows him to approach it the way geometers approach their problems, by means of hypothesis. Socrates explains this method by using a geometer who wants to find a solution to a problem where he does not know a particular property that is necessary to know in order to find a solution. Knowing that he is missing an important piece of information, the geometer can hypothesize the answer by assuming the missing property is the same as a different property that he knows. To demonstrate this, he suggests a situation whe re a geometer is asked if a triangle with a specific area can be inscribed in a particular circle. The geometer does not know the area of either the circle or the triangle, however, he can hypothesize that a triangle can be inscribed in the circle if the area of the triangle is less than the area of the circle. This process allows the geometer to assert the possibility, or impossibility, of a solution to a problem where he does not have all of the information. The geometer was unable to answer theShow MoreRelatedSocrates : The Suicide Of Socrates1405 Words à |à 6 PagesSocrates was born in 470 BCE in Athens, Greece. The Upcoming Development of Liberal Democracies in Mexico...
Democracy: A political system in which citizens enjoy a number of basic civil and political rights, and in which their most important political leaders are elected in free and fair elections and accountable under a rule of law (26). In the studies we have undertaken, comparing and exploring various countries and systems politically, economically, and psychologically throughout the quarter, this outcry of democracy has prevailed as a main theme. Many college students consume alcohol as a way of forgetting certain situations in their college life that is stressing them, make friends and even maintain them. But in actual sense alcohol only suppresses the problem for a very short duration of time after which the negative effects to the individual manifest themselves such as poor personal health, poor concentration in school and financial constrains. Excessive use of alcohol leads to neglect of major responsibilities such as schooling and this state is termed as alcoholism that has no cure but can only be controlled (Presley, Meilman, Cashin, 1996). Starters mainly consume alcohol varieties that are less concentration but upon advancing they get to very concentrated brands that eliminate the desire to drink fast. Alcohol Abuse among College Students The African-American students within the campus drink less compared to white counterparts. The students who engage in heavy drinking are usually aged between 18-29 years and drink up to three times in a week with very few going up to five days; this clearly indicates that alcohol is readily available within the campus and that the alcohol-control policies are somehow lenient. Though this should not generalize that all students drink, a good number of students have never tasted alcohol within the institution. The availability of alcohol within the community surrounding the Campus draws students towards alcohol even if the campus authorities are against it. In order to lower the levels of alcohol abuse among students of drinking age which is set at 21 years by the federal laws, the university encourages students to drink responsibly and behave in a mature manner (Oââ¬â¢Malley Johnston, 2002). To reduce alcohol abuse the university has ensured that those students selling alcohol within the campus premises have a commercial license that governs their conduct. à The university has ensured that alcohol is sold in designated points such as the students centre and not just anywhere and this helps reduce its accessibility thus reducing its abuse. Any misconduct upon being drunk should be reported to the campus dean within twenty four hours of such offence and appropriate punishment administered according to the law (Presley, Meilman, Cashin, 1996). Resistance To Technology Essays - Biology, Cloning,
Resistance To Technology Resistance to Technology Technology. What would we do without it? Probably have a lot less fun and have a lot shorter life span. Think about it, you couldn't watch Dawson's Creek or Friends every week. That would mean that the lives of millions of teenage girls in America would cease to exist. And yet there are still some people who are afraid of new technology. They're afraid of a technology that could improve the lives of Americans just because they saw a couple of science fiction movies where an extremely unlikely situation occurred and all hell broke loose. When in reality precautions are made to ensure that things like that won't happen. Super-intelligent sharks won't become smarter than humans and nearly escape to rule the world like they did in the movie Deep Blue Sea. One technology that people seem to most fear is cloning. Specifically one of my friends raised a good point about the subject, she said that in her high school they had a debate about cloning and the side against cloning stated that if there was an exact genetic clone of yourself and this clone went out and committed a whole bunch of crimes, then how would they know who did it unless you had an alibi. Another thing that people seem to be afraid of when it comes to cloning is the religious aspect. Many see cloning as being too close to ?playing god?. They don't think that specifically sorting out genes and selecting which traits their children will have is morally correct. But there's a flipside to this in that if we can select which traits our children will have, we may be able to eliminate hereditary diseases like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia. It all depends on how the question is phrased. If I were to ask somebody, ?Should we be able to change the genetic traits of our chi ldren?, they would most likely respond negatively. However, if the question was phrased as ?Should we be able to genetically cure abnormalities in our children?, most people would change their minds. This just goes to show that most people don't really have any idea what they believe when it comes to cloning and gene therapy. And what they think they believe tends to come from other people. Maybe if people were more educated and better understood subjects like this, they would better be able to make their own decisions. Another aspect that people seem to resist technology is how many people fear losing their jobs because of a new technology. For example, this summer when I was working at Polaris Industries in Roseau MN, I saw many machines that have taken the place of human workers. In the welding department they use robots to do a lot of the spot welds. While this is more efficient and creates a higher output for the company, the robots took away about 50 jobs when they were put into service. But if you look at the specific area where I worked (metal paint) machines actually created jobs. Before Polaris built the metal paint area they used to have all their parts painted in another city and then shipped them up here. But after they added metal paint to the plant there were able to create 50 new jobs including mine. So there are good and bad sides to this issue also. Probably one of the most misunderstood technologies is the Internet. Some people believe that the Internet is the source of all that is wrong in the world and it's just a bunch of porn pages. When in reality the Internet is a source of much of the information in the world. ?Well, DUH. Of course we have access to pornography on the Internet. Just like we have access to it in bookstores and movie theaters and cable television. This isn't exactly news anymore. It's called free expression, and in theory, at least when it concerns press freedoms, journalists are in favor of it. Or maybe free expression is only for journalists(Block) Yes there are web pages out there that have pornography on them but it's a person's choice on whether or not they want to visit those pages.

Cost-Effective vs. Cost-Efficient
Cost-Effective vs. Cost-Efficient Cost-Effective vs. Cost-Efficient Cost-Effective vs. Cost-Efficient By Maeve Maddox A reader has asked about the use of these two terms: I was wondering if you would care to comment on the difference between cost-efficient and cost-effective. In both, Oxford and Webster (the free online versions), cost-effective is properly defined while the cost-efficient page points to that of cost-effective. It looks like cost-efficient is a tolerated synonym of a lesser status. As always, my starting place is The Oxford English Dictionary. There I find a reference to cost-effective in the entry for cost: cost-effective adj. designating or pertaining to a project, etc., that is effective in terms of its cost. The first OED citation given for cost-effective is dated 1967. I find no entry for cost-efficient. Merriam-Webster Unabridged provides entries for both terms: cost-effective adjective:à economical in terms of tangible benefits produced by money spent. cost-efficient adjective: cost-effective. M-W gives 1970 as the ââ¬Å"first known use of cost-efficient.â⬠I conclude that there is no difference of meaning between cost-effective and cost-efficient. Is one term of ââ¬Å"lower statusâ⬠than the other? The most that can be said is that one is more common than the other. The OED and M-W date the terms from 1967 and 1970, but the Ngram Viewer shows that cost-effective was present in printed sources as early as 1836. Both terms are documented in works printed in 1887. Cost-effective shows a bump on the graph in the 1940s, but then both terms remain more or less even until the 1960s, when cost-effective soars ahead. A Google search also shows a preference for cost-effective: ââ¬Å"cost-effectiveâ⬠: about 83,600,000 results ââ¬Å"cost-efficientâ⬠: about 7,840,000 resultsà My advice is to use the more common term: cost-effective.
